Today is Pentecost Wednesday. See previous post for a brief explanation of the nomenclature. Let us invoke the Holy Spirit for the speedy recovery of our School Director, Rev. Fr. Jose E. David, for unity among people with different ideals, and for peace among nations. Let us also include in our prayers our Supreme Pontiff, Pope Benedict XVI (Italian news agency reports that the Pope has become one of the "easy targets" of some terrorist groups) and also that the Fraternity of St. Pius X may be granted an official position within the Church.

VENI, Sancte Spiritus, reple tuorum corda fidelium, et tui amoris in eis ignem accende.	COME, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of Thy faithful and kindle in them the fire of Thy love.

Today in the 1962 Missal (Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite), our Mother Church celebrates Pentecost Tuesday. In the former rite, Easter Season does not abruptly end on Pentecost Sunday (Whitsunday) but gradually ends by a prolongation of the feast for eight days (the Octave of Pentecost). Here is a hymn called Veni, creator Spiritus. It is a hymn used during the liturgical celebrations for Pentecost and for certain liturgical celebrations. Let us invoke the Holy Spirit for a peaceful world, for unity among people with different ideals, and for guidance for our Mother Church.

A week ago, the SNA faculty planned to visit Rev. Fr. Jose E. David who was on NCCU of the St. Luke’s Medical Center but was rescheduled on Thursday (May 26, 2011). Fr. David suffered a mild stroke and pneumonia. When they visited him, he was watching WILTIME, BIGTIME! He was waving his hands showing his visitors that he is okay and there is no need to worry about him. Some of those who visited him broke down and cried. Many prayers have been offered for his speedy recovery. Let us keep offering more. (On Saturday, May 28, Fr. David underwent a surgical procedure called tracheostomy and insertion of PEG.)

On a lighter note, the St. Michael the Archangel Archdiocesan School (SMTAAS) is still undergoing a “makeover” courtesy of the very competent and hardworking administrators of the St. Nichols Academy (Rev. Fr. Jose E. David - School Director, Mr. Rey G. Yumang - Principal, Mr. Arnold Z. Pangilinan - School Treasurer). Now being the sister school of SNA, SMTAAS has been renamed St. Michael School: Center for Catholic Education (SMS:CCE). Visit their blog here.

Summer Vacation Safety Checklist

A driving vacation can be a lot of fun, but don't leave safety and common sense behind. Here are some basics for a safe vacation.

Check your car or have it serviced before any long trip (battery, tires, brakes, belts and fluids).
Have a qualified technician check the air conditioner.
Check your oil. If you will be towing a trailer or boat, or driving in the desert, switch to a motor oil with higher viscosity.
Pack an emergency kit that includes water, jumper cables, flares, a flashlight, equipment to change a tire and a first aid kit.
Make sure your child safety seats and booster seats are properly installed.

On the Road

Require all occupants to buckle up, with children under 12 in the back seat.
Obey speed limits and all roadway signs.
Drive calmly and avoid entanglements with aggressive drivers.
Pack non-perishable snacks and plenty of juice or water.
Take frequent breaks- at least every two hours- and avoid driving when tired.
Be especially careful around railroad crossings.
Avoid driving in the "No Zone" around trucks. If you can't see the truck driver in the truck's mirror, the truck driver can't see you.
Slow down in work zones, obey all signs and flaggers and pay attention to the vehicle in front of you (most work zone crashes are rear-end collisions due to an inattentive driver.

Touring your destination

Never leave children alone in the car with the windows rolled up even for a few minutes!
A sunshade can help keep the car from becoming dangerously hot.
Cover up seat belts and child safety seats with a towel or blanket while the car is parked (on a hot day, the plastic and metal parts can get hot enough to burn.
Be sure to pack your bike helmets if you plan to bring or rent bikes.
Review safe pedestrian practices with children.
Have a planned meeting site in case someone gets lost.

Spiritual meaning of the sparrow

The Sparrow is a symbol of Hope, Fertility, Renewal of Life, and Resurrection.

The returning Sparrow, is the herald of spring, a symbol of the mother goddess, rebirth, and the Resurrection.

The Sparrow was an attribute of Aphrodite. The long battle at Troy was forecast when nine sparrows, representing the nine years of war, were eaten by a snake.

As a Christian Symbol, the Sparrow represents the concern of God for the least among all people, who are, nevertheless, under the protection of God the Father; for even the sparrow came to earth only through the will of God.

The bible proclaims the luck of the sparrow and the generosity of God by writing that "... even the lowly sparrow was invited to make her home in the Lord's temple" (Psalm 84:3). It is also a symbol of a pious holy family, who lives a humble, lowly life in obedience to the will of God.

A lone Sparrow upon a roof, represents Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane, when He is emotionally abandoned by His sleeping disciples (Psalm 102:7).

Twelve Sparrows can represent the twelve Apostles. Some Gospels, relate the story of the child Jesus, forming twelve sparrows out of the clay of a riverbank and giving them life.

History of the Saint Nichols Academy

The Saint Nichols Academy has been in existence in the town of Macabebe for many years. It is the only Catholic academic institution in the town of Macabebe and is supervised by the Archbishop of the City of San Fernando, Pampanga.

Rev. Fr. Genaro Sazon founded the parochial school in 1947 and named it Auxilium Christianorum. The RVM sisters were tasked to supervise the school. It was temporarily closed from 1954 to 1974. In 1975, the school was reopened by Sor. Maria Encarnacion T. Rodriguez of the Handmaids of our Lady of the Sacred Heart (HOLSH) with a new name – Our Lady of Fatima Catholic School. The school offered complete pre-elementary and elementary course and classes were housed in the school buildings beside the parish church.

Msgr. Anastacio Silvestre, a native of San Vicente, Macabebe, was the first parish priest to assume the position of school director. With the new administration, the name of the school was changed to Saint Nichols Parish School, in honor of the patron saint of the town – San Nicholas de Tolentino.

When Msgr. Anastacio Silvestre was transferred to another parish, Msgr. Gregorio S. Torres took over the parish and the school as well. Being an experienced school director, Msgr. Torres was able to introduce many significant changes in the supervision of the school. He conceived and implemented the granting of full scholarship to poor but deserving students of the town. His greatest achievement as a school director was the Government Recognition granted to the school on February 21, 1989; No. E-03-S91 for Pre-Elementary and No. E-04-S91 for Elementary Course.

In 1995, the Archdiocese of San Fernando effected a reshuffle in the pastoral assignments of the parish priests in the province. As expected another change in the school administration took place. A young energetic priest and an equally-experienced school administrator in the person of Rev. Fr. Jose E. David was assigned in the parish on June 29, 1995. Under his administration, Fr. David pursued the mission-vision to provide quality Catholic education to the students. As part of the expansion program, the school started to offer courses in the secondary level effective School Year 1996-1997. With this welcome development, the name of the school was changed to Saint Nichols Academy.

Finally, on April 12, 1999, Government Recognition No. S-004, S, 1999 for the complete four-year Secondary Course was granted to the school.

Presently, the school is located within the parish church lot of Macabebe, Pampanga. The parish church is in front of the town’s municipal hall.

FRESHMEN DOMINATE STREET DANCING 2011

With their interpretation of the Hot Air Balloon Festival of Angeles city, the Freshmen captured the hearts of the crowd as they performed an energetic and colourful festival entry, winning three of the four special awards at stake: Best in Costume, Best in Street Dancing and the Best in Theme Interpretation.

“Singkaban Festival” from Bulacan earned for the Seniors the second place and the other special award, Best in Choreography. The Sophomores won third place for their “Dinagyang Festival” of Iloilo while the Juniors captured the fourth place for their interpretation of the “Pasaka Festival” of Leyte.

The streetdancing competition was divided into two parts. The first part, the street dancing, was performed in a moving/walking manner for 2-3 minutes and were judged while the dancers were performing in the designated area along the main road of the town, fronting the Cano Building.

The second part, the festival theme interpretation, was presented for 6-12 minutes at the SNA Quadrangle and was performed by the dancers in their full costumes and props.

The invited judges included Mr. Jerry Cruz of the San Miguel Academy, Ms. Paulet Macalino of the Macabebe East District, Mr. Nelson Gonzales from Colegio De San Lorenzo, Ms. Ronamarie Luanzon from Singapore and Mrs. Perlita Calara, the PE Coordinator of the Macabebe East District.

Mr. Don Jeremy Clyde Cancio and Mrs. Rowena Viray hosted the program which started with the parade of muses from the pre-school department.

The officers of the 2010-2011 PTCA, headed by Mr. Marcial B. Nicdao Jr., ensured the smooth flow of the parade and the streetdancing as they coordinated with the local police officers in manning the parade routes and in handling the crowd.

SNA Grader Schoolers shine in PE Fest 2011

The SNA Elementary Department held the P.E. Dance Festival last February 16, 2011 as part of the 36th Foundation Week celebration.

The grades 1 and 2 pupils showcased their talents as each section competed for the calisthenics competition, wherein the grade 2-St. James got the 4th place, followed by grade 2-St. Benedict, and the grade 1-St. Gabriel settled for 2nd. The grade 1-St. Raphael notched the first place.

For the P.E. dance contest for the grades 3 and 4, the pupils of grade 3-St. Lawrence were announced the champions as they mixed their dance with some gymnastic moves, while the Grade 4-St. Matthew bagged 2nd place as they grooved to the steps from our national sport, the Arnis. They were followed by grade 3-St. Francis and grade 4-St. Mark, respectively.

A number of astounding production numbers gave extra enthusiasm to the event. First of them was the selected pre-school students who jived to a medley of Filipino nursery rhymes. Their performance was adjudged second during the AASP Cultural Contest. Next is the Elementary Choir, who sang their winning songs in the last AASP Meet, “A Better World” and “Nais Ko”. Lastly the High School Pep Squad wowed everyone as they gave a sample of their marvelous stunts and moves.

The panel of jury who evaluated all the performances are: Ms. Jellybee Viray, a Bachelor of Physical Education Graduate from the Bulacan State University and a P.E. instructor at ACLC Apalit; Mr. Julius Sarmiento, a former SNA dance troupe made SNA Pep Squad coach; and the head of the board, Mr. Conrado Guevarra, a former dance scholar from the University of the Assumption and the energetic principal of the Jesus Mary Joseph Montessori School.

This was the guiding motto of senior students Hannah Erika Cruz and Albert Tony Antonio In their quest to capture the Mr. and Ms. SNA titles, during the grand coronation night held on February 17, 2011, the fourth day of the 36th Foundation week at the SNA Quadrangle.

Hannah Erika Cruz scored an upset over the other pageant favorites as she got the judges’ nod and won 1st runner up in the talent competition in her Super Inday dance number. Erika was also named Ms. Photogenic, Best in Jeans, Best in Evening Gown, Ms. Campus Choice, and Ms. Charm.

Candidate number 12, Gladys Labso, who topped the preliminary competitions, finished as first runner up and took home three other awards – Best in Shorts, Ms. Personality, and Ms. Talent.

Completing the magic five among the girls are Rose Ann Dumalos of IV- St. Agnes who won 2nd runner up and Ms. Body Beautiful; Anjelyn Jane Cunanan was chosen 3rd runner up; and Ruzzel Magat of IV- St. Agnes ended as 4th runner up and brought home two other titles – Ms. Copycat and Ms. Facebook.

Other winners of the special awards include Daisy Aniciete of IV- St. Agnes (Ms. Telegenic), Abigail Tubig (Ms. Pepsi Max), Channyl Aprilyn Gonzales (2nd runner up – Ms. Talent) and Jasmilyn Cunanan (Ms. Friendship).

Among the males, Albert Tony Antonio shone the best among the field of 13 seniors. Albert was also awarded as Mr. Campus Choice, Best in Formal Wear, and Mr. Facebook.

Resty Lloyd Santos of IV- St. Agnes ended up as the 1st runner up and took home the title of Mr. Talent.

Rounding up the winning circle are Jon Lemuel Sunga, 2nd runner up, who also took four other awards – Mr. Charm, Mr. Copycat, Mr. Personality and 2nd runner up Mr. Talent; Jaiverson Cabral, clearly one of the crowd favorites, was chosen 3rd runner up and cornered Mr. Photogenic; 4th runner up was Raymund Bamba who was also awarded as 1st runner up Mr. Talent and Best in Shorts.

Completing the list of winners are Joshua Barcena (Mr. Telegenic), Hency Christ Manansala (Mr. Pepsi Max), Armarte John Balingit (Mr. Friendship) and Arman Flores (Best in Jeans and Mr. Body Beautiful).

AASP Cultural Contests: SNA bags 5 awards

The Nicholsians triumphed anew as they copped two silvers and three bronzes in the AASP Cultural Contests held last January 19, 2011 held at the Saint Augustine Academy of Pampanga in Floridablanca, Pampanga.

Even though they are the “bunso” in the SNA Family, the pre-schoolers still made the school proud as they bagged the 2nd place in the Nursery Rhyme Interpretation Contest. The selected Grades 1 and 2 pupils grooved to a medley of 70’s OPM songs to snatch the 2nd place in the pop modern dance category.

In the Choral Fest, the grade school choir composed of selected grade 3 and 4 pupils, under the training of Mr. Don Jeremy Cancio, placed third as they amazed the judges with their angelic voices in their interpretation of the song “A Beautiful World”.

The winning streak continued in the speech contests as Kate Josephine Lacap, a grade 5 student, and Jannica Lacanlale, a senior high School student, both copped third place in their respective category.

It is good to know that each Nicholsian is worthy to be called “the SNA’s pride”. So, keep up the good work!

‘The Horizon” conquers Region III

Saint Nichols Academy’s The Horizon added another feather to its multi-colored cap after it was adjudged as the best school paper all over Central Luzon during the Regional Schools Press Conference (RSPC) held last December 19-22, 2010 in San Fernando, Pampanga.

The school’s official publication won 1st Best School Paper of the Year, 2nd place in Editorial Page, 2nd in Sports Page, and 7th in Feature Page.

‘The Horizon’ bested more than 200 school papers from both public and private schools from Region III in the Bracket B- English category for secondary level.

“In my almost three years of training in our school, The Horizon still never disappoints us and has been consistently bringing home awards in the group contest of the division, regional, and even in the national level of the annual press conference. It’s a big honor for me to finish my high school studies as the editor-in-chief of the best school paper here in our region,” quipped Jon Lemuel Sunga, a senior student and editor-in-chief of The Horizon school year 2010-2011.

The school paper has figured prominently in the annual press conference since it first joined the group contest in 2005. It has already won two national awards: 5th Best in News Page during the 2007 NSPC in Baguio City and 4th Best in Layout during the 2008 NSPC in Koronadal City, Cotabato.

SNA rules Macabebe Day Streetdancing Contest

The Saint Nichols Academy Grade School street dancers bagged the first place in the Street dancing competition held during the Macabebe Day celebration last January 17, 2011 at the Macabebe Quadrangle.

The SNA contingent scored an upset as they bested seven other teams from the public and private high schools in the town that included Pampanga Colleges, Colegio de San Lorenzo, Telacsan National HS, Caduang Tete NHS, Sta Maria NHS, San Vicente-San Francisco NHS and San Esteban HS. The celebration started with a parade of muses from each barangay.

The SNA was represented by selected grade 5 and 6 pupils. Combining their youthful energy and colorful costumes, the street dancers wowed the crowd and impressed the judges with their interpretation of the Maskara Festival of Bacolod.

Sta. Maria National High School was declared second place while San Esteban High School gained the third place.

The SNA contingent was trained by SNA’s resident choreographer Sir Rolex C. Bie and his younger brother, Rowell C. Bie.

Students with better study methods and strategies score higher on their exams.

Everyone is different, different methods work for different people the following are only suggestions on improving upon your current studying techniques.

It is best to review the material right after class when it's still fresh in your memory.

Don't try to do all your studying the night before the test. Instead space out your studying, review class materials at least several times a week, focusing on one topic at a time.

Have all of your study material in front of you: lecture notes, course textbooks, study guides and any other relevant material.

Find a comfortable and quiet place to study with good lighting and little distractions (try avoiding your own bed, it is very tempting to just lie down and take a nap).

Start out by studying the most important information.

Learn the general concepts first, don't worry about learning the details until you have learned the main ideas.

Take notes and write down a summary of the important ideas as you read through your study material.

Take short breaks frequently. Your memory retains the information that you study at the beginning and the end better than what you study in the middle.

Space out your studying, you'll learn more by studying a little every day instead of waiting to cram at the last minute. By studying every day, the material will stay in your long-term memory but if you try to study at the last moment, the material will only reside in your short-term memory that you'll easily forget.

Make sure that you understand the material well, don't just read through the material and try to memorize everything.

If you choose to study in a group, only study with others who are serious about the test.

Test yourself or have someone test you on the material to find out what your weak and strong areas are. You can use the review questions at the end of each chapter or practice tests the teacher may give out as well as other materials.

Listening to relaxing music such as classical or jazz on a low volume can relieve some of the boredom of studying.

Don't study later than the time you usually go to sleep, you may fall asleep or be tempted to go to sleep, instead try studying in the afternoon or early evening. If you are a morning person try studying in the morning.

With the upcoming beauty and brains competition in St. Nichols Academy Macabebe Pampanga this February 17, 2011, here are some tips for you hopefuls:

TIP # 1 – Never act like you are the best thing that just walked through the door! Leave the pre-madonnna attitude at home! No matter what contest you are in, or what event you are at, or no matter how well you think you are going to fair...always act like you are the newest kid on the block! You can always stand to learn a new thing or two from your fellow contestants or organizers.

TIP #2 – Always investigate or learn about the contest you are entering or the event you are trying to represent. Nothing looks more "model type" than someone that does not have a clue about the event or company they are representing. Do some homework, memorize a little bit. And if there's questions that come up during the event that you are unsure of, then be honest and say you do not know the answer. Do not try to fake it!

Tip #2: Get to know the event you are entering.

TIP #3 – Be prepared for the event. Never leave outfits or routines for contests until the last minute. You'll run out of time, and then you will not be satisfied with your selections. Always bring a little sewing kit with you, because you never know when you'll have to make last-minute fixes! Always bring a cordless curling iron if you are curling your hair because there is almost never a plug outlet in change rooms! Always bring your own mirror! Why fight for a mirror with all the others?

TIP #4 – Be on time! Always! This is a must. Being fashionably late for a contest or an event....is bad business! No one cares if you had to powder your nose....again! In this business being late often means that someone else will get your spot!

TIP #5 – Be curtious to your fellow models. There's no point to being rivals and bad-mouthing each other. Yes, it makes for an interesting competition but when the contest is over, it just makes for enemies! Treat everyone with respect.

TIP #6 – Do not-bad talk your fellow contestants/models at any point in time! I know this one sounds like #5 but it bares repeating! Talking to girls about other girls....never stays a secret! A lesson to be well learned by many females. From experience....it's never the loudest girl that wins!

TIP #7 – Respect the organizers of the contest. These are the people that can make or break you. If you think for one second they do not have any hand in selecting the winner...guess again! The judges may pick the winner, but the organizers often give a full report to the judges about how a contestant has been acting throughout the event. Everything does get noticed. Even when you think you are not being judged....guess what? You are being judged. So you usually cannot fake it!

TIP #8 – Respect the rules of the contest. If there is a curfew, even if you are 30 years old, there's a reason for the curfew! Don't be shocked if there's a surprise check at your door just after curfew.

TIP #9 – Leave your boyfriends at home!!! Oh for god sakes, this one has to be the biggest one! Ladies, your boyfriend can be your best friend, but at times your worst enemy. Guys love to see girls in magazines, or whereever but when it is their girlfriend that is being the subject of every man's attention, watch out for a change in attitude. Don't let him dictate what you can and cannot do. If you want to enter a contest or do a photo shoot, and if you've done your homework prior to, it, then all the more power to you. Tell the boyfriend that you'll call him when you get the chance during the event but you'll be busy!

TIP #10 – Have fun! Enjoy the experience. Whether it is a contest, an event, a show or whatever, treat it like you may never get to be there again or do itt ever again. Soak up the memories! And always follow up with a kind thank you email to the organizers so you never burn your bridges!

BONUS TIP – Refrain from saying the contest was fixed if you do not win. It just makes you look like a sore loser. That's why it's so important that you try to just have fun instead.

By being yourself, learning about the contest you are entering and being prepared you, too, can be living the model rock star lifestyle.

Who will conquer this 2011’s most coveted Mr. and Ms. SNA?

The challenge is on among 14 beautiful young ladies and 14 handsome young men. Who will carry on the traditional Mr. and Ms. SNA stage walk? The king and queen of the night are about to be revealed soon.

SNA’s Foundation Day is coming this February 14 to 18. Students, teachers and parents are busy preparing spectacular costumes and performances. The contestants for Mr. SNA are Jon Lemuel Sunga and Albert Tony Antonio from St. Bridgette, Michael Jacob Fidellaga, Joshua Barcena, Avenir Manalastas, Resty Lloyd Santos, Armarte John Balingit, Paul Anthony Cruz, Larein Pol Baluyut, and Raymund Bamba from St. Agnes, and Jaiverson Cabral, Arman Dioci Flores, Gerald Ganab, and Hency Christ Manansala from St. Cecilia.

The events that will occur for the contest are as scheduled: on February 12 – a Closed Door Interview will be held at the school’s Mini Theatre at 1 PM, on February 14 – the Pre-Pageant will occur at 7 PM where the Talent and Shorts Competition will be witnessed in the SNA Quadrangle, and on February 17 – the much anticipated Coronation Night is set off at 7 PM in the SNA Quadrangle where it will be decided who will be this year’s Mr. and Ms. SNA winners.
Join the buzz as the Mr. and Ms. SNA Competition starts to heat up. Students, teachers and people alike are having their own favorites for this year’s winner. What about you?

2011 SNA Foundation Day: What’s up?

SNA will celebrate its 36th Foundation Day this coming February 14 to 18. The celebration will tick off with a morning assembly and will be followed by its customary motorcade around neighboring towns during the day. Contestants vying for the Mr. and Ms. SNA will have their Pre-Pageant Night in the evening to showcase their talents including presentation of production numbers.

On February 15, the Grade 5 and 6 will have their FS Grand Ball for the first time in the school’s Foundation Day history. The FS Grand Ball is similar to the Junior and Senior Prom which the third and fourth year students will be missing this year. The Grade 5 and 6 students will have their first taste of a dance party to enjoy the evening.

On the third day of the school’s Foundation Day, there will be a Thanksgiving Mass followed by the Dance Festival of the students from Elementary level in the morning. The BINGO for a Cause will be joined by students, teachers, and parents in the afternoon to add up to the merriment.

The most awaited day comes with the coronation of Mr. and Ms. SNA on the night of February 17. The anticipated awarding of ceremonies is one of the main highlights of SNA’s Foundation Day every year. While a Family Day will be held in the morning.

SNA’s 36th Foundation Day will be concluded with the usual Street Dance participated by the high school students as well as the Thanksgiving Party in the evening.

Students, parents, and teachers are expected to join the fun and celebrate SNA’s 2011 Foundation Day.

Once again, bright students of St. Nichols Academy Macabebe, Pampanga have shown their skill and talent in the recently concluded 32nd Regional Schools Press Conference 2010.

The annual press conference for elementary and high school students opened on December 19 and culminated on December 22, 2010 with our kids bagging a first place trophy plus two 2nd placers.
